Designed for shorthanded ocean racing, the IMOCA or International Monohull Open Class Association 60 is the development class used for all pinnacle solo and double handed ocean races, including the Vendée Globe, Route du Rhum and Transat Jacques Vabre.
These boats are some of the fastest in the world, and as the IMOCA Class Rule is an ‘open’ rule, use some of the most advanced technology in the search for performance and reliability. In fact the first line of the rule book states that ‘anything which is not expressly forbidden, restricted or enforced is permitted’.

The ‘Open 60’ monohulls first appeared in the 1980s during the BOC Challenge (a single-handed round-the-world race with stopovers); they were then chosen for the first Vendée Globe in 1989. Soon after the IMOCA class was created, uniting the skippers and standardising the safety rules regarding the boats.
